Commissioning a Portrait...

Questions To Ask Yourself

  • What are the budget parameters you will be comfortable with?
  • Why do you want a painting done for you?
  • Who or what will be the subject?
  • Where will it hang and who is it for?
  • Do the examples viewed demonstrate the style and qualities you want?

Factors that may influence the fee

  • The most important factor influencing the fee is the time needed to do the work.
  • An 18"x 24" is a normal size for a simple portrait.
  • A classical oil takes longer but may produce better results.
  • A simple bust with a plain background takes less time.
  • Costuming and props can add interest and cost.
  • Hands and additional figures take more time
  • Complex backgrounds and patterned can double the time needed.
  • Travel time adds to the price.
  • Where and how the final art is framed is another important factor.
  • When do you need it?

Payment unless otherwise contracted
